Background

Dr. Reisenthel supports basic and applied research activities at NEAR. He has over 20 years experience in fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. He is the developer of modeling techniques which have been applied to a diverse range of technical fields, including aeroservoelasticity, aeroacoustics, and electromagnetic pulse response of aircraft. More recently, he has been involved in the quantification of computational uncertainty, the development of multidimensional response surface technology, and their combined application to risk-based optimization and multifidelity optimization.

Since 1989, he has worked on the development of improved computational methods used to predict vortical flow around slender bodies, and their application to computational aeroelasticity. Dr. Reisenthel also made contributions in the areas of compressible turbulence, turbulence in rarefied gases, and unsteady flow separation at high Reynolds numbers. Dr. Reisenthel directed a research program aimed at the mathematical modeling of nonlinear aerodynamics for flight simulations, using nonlinear indicial response theory. This effort resulted in the development of NEAR's Indicial Prediction System (IPS) software. He is has pursued the application of this technology to a diverse range of technical fields, including aeroservoelasticity, aeroacoustics, earthquake (geotechnical/geoenvironmental) engineering, electromagnetics, and nonlinear sea-keeping.

Prior to joining Nielsen Engineering, Dr. Reisenthel was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). While at IIT, Dr. Reisenthel carried out research in three-dimensional unsteady separation for flow around pitching forebodies. There, he also taught courses in applied mathematics and heat transfer. As a Ph.D. candidate, he made contributions in the areas of free shear flow stability with feedback enhancement. His M.S. research focused on the control of flow separation behind a rearward facing step using forced unsteadiness.
